Iowa Lakes Community College defeated the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Bears 70 to 64 in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Division II Basketball Tournament held on the DMACC Boone Campus Gymnasium.
The Lakers built a 10-point first half lead and went into the locker room with a 35 to 30 halftime lead. The Bears, under first year Head Coach B.J. McGinn, took their first lead of the game with 16:57 remaining in the second half on a three point play by sophomore Brad Burton of Toledo, OH. The DMACC comeback was fueled by Kannon Burrage’s five long-range three-pointers, all coming within a four minute time span at the start of the second half.
The Bears took a 49 to 40 lead on Burrage’s fifth three-pointer of the second half, but the Lakers came back to tie the score at 52 with 8:20 remaining in the game. Iowa Lakes regained the lead with 4:49 left on the clock on a three-point play by Eddie Boyce Taylor, who led the Lakers with 19 points. Armon Boston added 15 points, Robert Burns 12 and Darryl Davis 10 for the victors.
DMACC was led by Burrage’s game high 22 points on 5 of 10 three point shooting. Freshman Hal Bateman of Davenport scored 15 points and sophomore Tavaryus Gray of Orlando, FL tallied 12 points for DMACC, which concluded the season with a 22-7 record.
The fifth-seeded Iowa Lakes, 21-9, will play at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 6 at Fort Dodge against the winner of the Ellsworth-Clinton Community College game.
