EMS - Emergency Medical Service Education Program

There are currently five levels of education in the Emergency Medical Services field. Of these five DMACC currently offers two of these programs on the Ankeny campus, the First Responder and EMT-Basic.

First Responder is a 60-hour three-credit emergency care course, which emphasizes the assessment and treatment of life threatening emergencies. In addition the management and care of wounds, fractures, environmental emergencies, as well as other medical emergencies is discussed. Students must be 17 years old. Total cost for this course is approximately $500.00 and includes all tuition, books, testing fees and supplies. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be allowed to test for state licensure/national certification. This course meets once a week in the evenings from 6-10 PM and is offered during the spring and fall semesters on the Ankeny campus and lasts about two months.

EMT-Basic is a 126-hour, six-credit course that meets twice a week in the evenings from 6 – 10 PM and on an occasional Saturday. This course is offered during the spring, summer and fall semesters and lasts for approximately four months. This course is designed to educate the student in the fundamentals of patient assessment. In addition, the management of various traumatic injuries and medical problems are discussed. This course is designed to educate the student in various hands on skills such as basic airway management, vital sign assessment, immobilization, splinting, assisting patients with medication administration and IV maintenance. Student will be required, upon successful completion of various in class tests to participate in clinical rotations at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Iowa Methodist Hospital and Broadlawns for a total of 20 hours. In addition, students will be required to participate in a ride time program with a Des Moines Fire Department Medic Squad over the course of 12 hours. By the completion of the program the student must document a total of 15 patient contacts while in the clinical and ride time settings. Students must be 18 years old, a high school graduate or hold GED Certificate, and have verification of current successful completion of American Heart Association Health Care Provider or Red Cross Professional Rescuer course by the first night of class. Total cost for this course is approximately $1000.00 and includes all tuition, books, testing fees, and supplies. Upon successful completion of this course students will be allowed to test for state licensure/national certification.

EMT – Paramedic Specialist – Coming in the fall of 2010. This course will last for approximately one year and be offered for 46 credit hours. Students will have the option to pursue an Associate’s Degree upon successful completion of the paramedic specialist education course. This level of education represents the highest level of pre hospital emergency care available. Paramedic Specialists are educated in advanced airway management techniques and procedures as well as extensive patient assessment techniques. Paramedic Specialists are educated in the interpretation of ECG’s as well as an extensive list of various types of medications. This is in addition to the extensive education in trauma assessment and management.
